(Madame Era Tognoli died at the age of 92. The founder of the Metro Lyric Opera Company, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011, comforted by the presence of family and friends. Madame Tognoli was the director and motivating force behind the Metro Lyric Opera. Under her tutelage, it became one of the leading American regional opera companies presenting 50 years of summer opera festivals covering a vast repertoire that has given the opportunity to both amateur and professional singers to display their voice and interpretative skills to appreciative audiences. An accomplished performer herself, Era started her career at 16, hosting her own radio show. She honed her singing voice with a stay in Italy, where she earned a Master in voice from La Scala, Italy's most celebrated opera house. There, she was chosen for the role of Liu in Puccini's Turandot performed at the Arena di Verona with Maria Callas in the title role. Upon her return to the United States, she had the opportunity to continue her singing career in various roles with appearances at the Metropolitan and other theaters, before settling in Allenhurst. There, she dedicated the rest of her life to bringing the "bel canto" to vast audiences while giving loving care to the development of talented students who found in her not only a superb teacher, but also a trusted friend and counselor. Madame Tognoli coached a number of her pupils to professional careers that brought them to sing in the most renowned opera houses in the United States and abroad. Era will be missed by many. Her dedication to music and opera will be remembered as a bright example of how a single individual can inspire many to give the best of themselves to the art they love.)
