Fee Schedule for Estate Services
Most estate fees are commission only. The commission is competitive within the marketplace, and may be determined by the nature of the estate.
Certain fees may be deducted at the conclusion from the settlement of the estate. These fees will always be disclosed and discussed before any charges are incurred by the estate or the client. These other fee services may include but are not limited to:
•Moving or transportation costs
•Extravagant or extra cleanup fees
•Itemized inventory or appraisals
•Shipping of merchandise to sell at another venue
•Extra advertising or publicity
•Equipment purchases for property management or other estate needs
Types of Appraisals:
1.Fair Market Value – Fair market value is defined by the IRS as “the price at which the property would change hands between a willing buyer and a willing seller, neither being under any compulsion to buy or to sell.”
2.Replacement Value – The dollar amount necessary to replace an item in the current retail market in the event of loss.
3.Insurance Appraisal – The amount you schedule on your homeowner’s policy for replacement or repair of personal property.
Reasons for Appraisal:
1.Buying insurance: to cover theft or damage
2.Damage claims: even if not previously appraised, this can determine if restoration is possible, value lost before restoration, or any lost value after restoration
3.Charitable donations: if you donate personal property to charity, you must know a fair market value to claim a tax deduction.
4.Estate planning and gifts of personal property: establish values before making bequests of specific pieces, especially if equity is a factor.
5.Divorce: appraisals are crucial for equitable division and personal property distribution.
6.Estate taxes: appraisals are required for some estates by federal or state law.
7.Curiosity: if you want to know what your items are worth.
Fee Schedule:
Written appraisals range in price from $125 to $175 an hour. Verbal or emailed appraisals start at $35 an item. All appraisals may be scheduled by appointment.
