Itzchak Tarkay (pronounced Tarki)- died June 3, 2012 - Tarkay has achieved recognition as a leading representative of a new generation of figurative artists. The inspiration for this work clearly lies with French Impressionism, the inspiration for his work of Matisse and his drawing style from Toulouse Lautrec. While summing up the characteristics of his model subject without relying on the precise copying of natural forms, or the patient assembling of exact detail, Tarkay’s rich tapestry of form and color is achieved thought the use of silk-screen printing. Many colors are laid over one another and used to create texture and transparency. After exhibiting both in Israel and abroad, he received recognition at the International Art Expo in New York in 1986 and 1987 for works in several forms of media, including oil, acrylic and watercolor.

He comes from the tradition of Fauves but has encompassed the abstract expressionism of Pollack and de Kooning and his place in history is assured.

He went on to develop his own unique style becoming one of the major contributors to Surrealism. His primary theme has always been Jewish life and folklore in which he incorporated flower and animal symbols in unusual juxtapositions, with forms floating rather insecurely in space, his color very rich and evocative of peasant life. Chagall died in 1985 following a career that spanned eight decades and included the creation of more than 1,000 fine art prints. Among his best-known works are 'Les Ames Mortes' by Gogol, 'Les Fables de la Fontaine' and 'La Bible'.
