In 1919 W. Leland and El Smith purchased a parcel of land in Fair Oaks, and transformed it into a unique property. In 1920 they had a son, Robert L. (Bob) Smith. From a very early age Bob acquired a keen interest in all the natural sciences and built an impressive museum on the property by the time he was 20. While serving in WWII Bob lost his hearing but nevertheless went on to become a most illustrious volcanologist, a geologist and scientist. Leland's wife opened Fair Oaks Florist on the property.
