She co-founded the Ebony Museum of Chicago, now the DuSable Museum of African American History. An active member of the African-American community, she also helped to establish the South Side Community Art Center, whose opening on May 1, 1941 was dedicated by the First Lady of the United States Eleanor Roosevelt. There at the age of 23 Burroughs served as the youngest member of its board of directors. A long-time educator, she spent most of her career at DuSable High School. Taylor-Burroughs was a prolific writer, with her efforts directed toward the exploration of the Black experience and to children, especially to their appreciation of their cultural identity and to their introduction and growing awareness of art. Leather bags. Coach This elegant HUMAN SIZE bronze sculpture of an African woman is made in the style of Karl Hagenauer. It can be dated to the 1950s.
The South Ndebele people of Africa wear neck rings as part of their traditional dress and as a sign of wealth and status. Only married women are allowed to wear the rings, called dzilla. Metal rings are also worn on different parts of the body, not just on the neck.
Traditionally these rings are given to a wife by her husband, and not removed until the husband’s death; however, these rings are Individual and do not function as a body modification. The rings are usually made of copper or brass.
This bronze sculpture of an African woman carrying a jug was surely inspired by the Ndebele woman.
The bronze is black and gold patinated. A true STUNNER! This piece stands at approx 6 FEET TALL.
