BIO INFORMATION ON HELEN PICKLE (1914-2002)
Helen was an Aberdeen, MS artist that is well known for her folk art paintings that many compared to the style and charm of Grandma Moses. She moved to Northern MS from Texas after her marriage. When her only son died in 1972, she suffered a series of strokes that left her immobilized in her left arm and leg. She learned to squeeze the paint tubes between her legs with help from friends, and she used only on hand to paint. All of her work was done totally from memory.
Her paintings were usually done on masonite and her husband Reuben made the frames by hand of fine quality walnut, cherry, and other woods. She expressed herself in very distinct style of paintings of the rural South that depicted a lot of characters with outstretched arms and hands with a delicate lacy style.
Her work of hand painted eggs have been displayed in the White House. Her works can also be found in several famous collections throughout the South. In life, she exhibited in the Delta and became a huge success and sought after artist.
Her work is included in the catalog for the exhibition, "Made by Hand: Mississippi Museum of Art. Helen Pickle"s work was also included in the exhibition "Twentieth Century Folk Art from the Collection of Flo and Jules Lafall," at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum in Connecticut in 1997.
We are please to have one of her paintings to offer for this estate sale. Pre-Sales are allowed with a buyer's premium. This process is explained on our Facebook page.
