Scott Shaw/The Plain DealerNicholas Lindan uses a "Brain Tuneup" machine, part of his late father Olgierd's leading collection of quackery.

SOUTH EUCLID -- Nicholas Lindan wants to sell you a lot of useless things.

"If they work," he vows, "I'll give you your money back."

His father, Dr. Olgierd Lindan, 95, died March 1, leaving behind much of what he once called the world's biggest collection of quackery.

"I call them cures that don't work for diseases you don't have," says Nicholas, one of the collector's three children.

A Great Vivocosmic Disc, for instance. Dr. Weaver's Nasal Filter. Vision Dieter: Eye Glasses to Cure Appetite. Dr. Scott's Electric Hairbrush to Cure Baldness. And a bottle of actual snake oil.

The collection peaked years ago at about 2,000 items. Dr. Lindan touted them on David Letterman's show and in U.S. News & World Report.

He later sold off many items, some to the Museum of Quackery at the Science Museum of Minnesota. But the rest still cram his 1919 mansion on six hidden acres in South Euclid.

They range from pretty little bottles and bracelets to curious helmets, belts and corsets to more than man-size machines with flashing lights, spinning dials and other complicated parts that would have looked high-tech a century or two ago.

They had one thing in common: relieving hypochondriacs of cash.

Olgierd (pronounced ole-GEARED) Lindan was a leading researcher and innovator at local hospitals. Born in Latvia, he escaped the Soviets and the Nazis, crossed the Pyrenees and the Sahara, performed surgery under fire, won the Polish Cross of Valor and earned two doctorates and a post-doctorate.

The free-thinker belonged to the South Shore Skeptics but employed a purported faith healer as a housekeeper and attended some sessions with her.

For a hobby, he collected old radios. At a sale, he stumbled across a supposed medical gadget and was tickled by its evident uselessness.

A few of his medical marvels actually work. He snapped up some early X-ray machines, for instance, that throw off huge sparks. He also bought many potions that truly ease pain, being 40 proof or so.

Lindan kept the sources of his treasures secret.

"The greatest pleasure," he once said with a sly smile, "is to make the competition jealous."

For all of science's progress, the son says quackery keeps doing brisk business. He predicts that many of today's health trends will look as silly tomorrow as his father's curios look today."
