Dr. Holloway's Estate Sales is proud to present the Hap Townes Art Collection for sale to the public. Hap Townes was the owner of the iconic Nashville "meat and three" that bore his name, located near Greer Stadium. The business was begun by Hap's father, "Hap Senior" in the 1920s and continued under "Hap Junior" until 1985. The legendary restauranteur was also a noted art collector. This sale will include between fifty and sixty pieces of art, paintings, sculpture and ceramics, collected by Hap and his wife over the course of fifty years. Included will be oils, watercolors, etchings, pencil sketches by artists such as Paul Penczner, Robert Meredith, Chester Martin and a monumental bronze of Stampeding Bulls by Heriberto Juarez. In addition there will be offered framed memorabilia related to the restaurant. There are dozens of framed autographed photographs of music stars and celebrities who dined at Hap Townes Restaurant as well as books and records inscribed to Hap.
One interesting aspect of this art collection is that there are at least three artists represented, Paul Penczner, Franz Weiss (father of Nashville's Anton Weiss) and Peter (aka Pedro) Enko were all Eastern Europeans who survived atrocities and hardships, in some cases internment/concentration camps, during and after the Second World War. Despite this they went on to create beauty with their lives.
On Thursday evening October 12 we will host an open house reception in which the collection will be opened for viewing and purchase to the public for the first time. The full Estate Sale will continue Friday and Saturday with the addition of many personal items from the Townes family.
