The Dancy-Polk House Inn is one of four buildings in Decatur to survive the Civil War and is on the National Register of Historic Places along with Alabama Register of Historic Places. It was used as headquarters for the Union Army during the war all three times Decatur was under siege. Later the home became an Inn and had such guest as Confederate General “Fightin’ Joe” Wheeler, and Union General Ely Lilly, James Garfield (later a U.S. President), Urchin, Dodge, Doolittle and the notorious Frank James, who boarded here prior to his surrender.
