Description & Details

Coach Lue C. & Evelyn Mims

Welcome to the home of two legendary Tuscaloosa pioneers.

From the Tuscaloosa Area Virtual Museum

“ Lue C. Mims Jr. coached football at Tuscaloosa Junior High and Druid High School — the only high school that blacks could attend during the 1960s before desegregation — from 1951 to 1986. Mims is viewed by many of the city's West End residents as a legend as big as Paul W. Bryant, a former University of Alabama head football coach.

An Alabama High School Athletic Association and Coaches Association meritorious service award winner, Mims led the Druid Dragons in 1968 to their first undefeated 10-0 season since 1937, and was the first black certified swimming coach in Tuscaloosa,

His former players say he was a father figure who commanded the respect of thousands. Mims died in 1998.”

Ms. Evelyn Louise Johnson Mims was a teacher of English, Oral Communication & Drama in the Tuscaloosa City Schools for 38 and 1/2 years as well as two years in the Lowndes County for a total of 40 & 1/2 years as a tireless educator.  Ms. Evelyn began her teaching career in Tuscaloosa at Druid High School. Ms. Mims was one of the first African-American teachers to desegregate the Tuscaloosa City School System at the high school level.

Ms. Mims was a five-time “Teacher of the Year” award winner in the Tuscaloosa City Schools as well as a Finalist Secondary Division for Jacksonville Teachers Hall of Fame. Ms. Mims served on the steering committee for developing Personnel Evaluation Performance for TCS. This was a five-member team that piloted the Clinical Master Teaching Program at the University of Alabama College of Education. In addition to recognition of outstanding service to numerous service organizations and clubs Ms. Mims was the first African-American to serve as Foreman of the Grand Jury in West Alabama.

Following retirement Ms. Evelyn continued her unceasing advocacy for education. She worked with the Bethel Community Outreach Ministry Program (for expelled students) as an English-Language Arts Teacher ensuring that students had daily access to The Tuscaloosa News and monthly access to Reader’s Digest. Ms. Mims volunteered at the Tuscaloosa Public Library during this time. Ms. Mims was also a caregiver for her parents. Ms. Evelyn still found time to proofread & edit articles for print  in addition to volunteering extensively at two area elementary schools.

Come enjoy this beautiful, well kept home full of Tuscaloosa history and unique vintage treasures. Enjoy the time  walk while exploring this fabulous estate.
