Dr. William Rhodes, PhD
Born in Kansas in 1916. Lived for a while in Colorado.
Began music study at the Ft. Collins Music Conservatory at age 6
Had a natural and ingenious interest in all things scientific
Moved to AZ in 1939 at the age of 16. Moved into this house in the early 1940’s
In his teens, built, flew and patented the first radio controlled model airplane
At age 27, designed and built an electric car with a top speed of 93mph
Designed and built three large telescopes. One was used on KittPeak and another at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff. The third was sold to New Mexico University
Was summonsed to Washington DC’s Naval Research Laboratory in 1943 to develop an underwater mine neutralization device to make Trans-Atlantic ship crossings safer. It worked.
Mentored by the famous inventor, Dr. Lee DeForest who developed the original vacuum tube, forerunner of the TV picture tube. Rhodes and DeForest collaborated on other inventions including the electric light amplifier for TV
Was an early Ham Radio Operator and later active with computers.
Was an early solar scientist with several patents, including the Synchronous Solar Heliostat in (the three large green mirrored devices in the yard and patio).
Was issued more than 40 U.S. patents (see list)
Authored many articles and several books on force fields and magnetism
Invented the Unidirectional Horizontal Seismograph to detect and measure earthquake strength and location from a single station.
Other notable achievements:
Assisted in the discovery of the planet Pluto at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff
Built a unique underground radiation shelter featured in Popular Mechanics
His UFO photos from this location in 1947 were researched by the USAF and are on display at the International UFO Museum and Research Center in Roswell, New Mexico
Dr. Rhodes passed away in 2007 at the age of 90.
This is a very unique Estate, the guy was an inventor his entire life so you will find lots of really cool stuff. We will have many more pictures to come. Photos from Lab are still coming, vintage and antique equipment, test tubs, Many of the unknown ????
Large metal pieces in photos are one of the inventions he created. Helios1, Illumination heliostat system. Beamed sunlight to the home for a version of solar. He had the invention trademarked.
