From the Estate of;

Helen K. Clarke, Captain  US Army Nurse Corps. 

As a civilian nurse in Honolulu  1941,  Helen Clarke was a 1st responder to the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor.  In the aftermath  she joined the US Women’s Army Corps eventually leading into the US Army Nurse Corps. She served along the front lines in field hospitals in France following the US push into Germany. No doubt she witnessed  devastating atrocities along the way. Once Munich was liberated,  Lt. Helen Clarke was assigned, and amongst the 1st to administer care, to the prisoners of the Dachau concentration camp.  Helen Clarke eventually made rank Captain before retiring from the US Military. Clarke’s experiences were recorded in the report/book “Dachau”. 

As was the case with many returning GIs, Clarke “liberated” a memento from the evil empire she helped to defeat.  We do not know for sure, though since she was amongst the 1st wave of liberators in Munich we can assume she had first access to a wide range of Nazi strongholds.

It is important to the family that whoever buys this piece appreciates the sacrifice and efforts of Helen Clarke. We will include a copy of the Report/Book “Dachau”, in hopes that her story will be told wherever this piece goes!
