Description & Details
This weekend we are honored to present the estate sale of actor, TV star and activist, Robert Clary.
He was best known for his role as Corporal Louis LeBeau on the popular 1960's sitcom, Hogan's Heroes, which was set inside a WWII German POW camp where a cast of allied prisoners carried on a clever sabotage campaign under the noses of their bumbling Nazi captors. It aired on CBS from 1965-1971. Amazingly, Clary (along with the two actor who played the German soldiers) was a Holocaust survivor.
Robert Widerman (Clary) was born in 1926 in Paris, the youngest of 14 children. He gained some success at 12 years old as a singer on a French radio station. When the Nazi's invaded France, he and the majority of his family were sent to concentrations camps. Robert spent three years doing his best to survive - mainly by singing and performing his way into the good graces of his Nazi captors. When he was finally liberated in 1945, he learned the majority of his family had been murdered. He returned to Paris and reunited with his surviving siblings.
He made is way to Hollywood with the help of singer / comedian Eddie Cantor, who believed in him from the start, and eventually became his father-in-law. For decades, he never spoke of his time in the concentration camps. It was the rise of Holocaust deniers in the 1980's that compelled him to start speaking up and speaking out in order to keep the truth alive. Engagements at high schools and community groups, volunteering with the Simon Wiesenthal Center's Museum of tolerance, working with the Shoah Foundation, even attending the first World Gathering of Holocaust Survivors in 1981, he has been recognized with countess awards and accolades for his efforts and was considered a hero in his own right. There is so much more to his story. We can't wait to share it with you.
The sale is set inside his beautiful Beverly Hills home and is filled with spectacular original art, glamorous 1970s furniture and decor, an expansive book collection, vintage barware and an amazing assortment of memorabilia from every facet of his life.
