This weekend in Beverly Hills, we are pleased to present a true time capsule—a collection that feels remarkably untouched, showcasing decades of glamorous living, just waiting to be discovered.

This is the estate sale of Bentley Morriss—a larger-than-life figure who founded Holloway House, the influential publishing house known for championing a generation of Black writers whose work was unapologetic, widely read, and pop-culturally significant. Born in Chicago in 1923, Bentley Morriss came to Los Angeles as a child and went on to live a remarkable, multifaceted life. After serving in the Coast Guard during World War II as an Armed Forces Radio announcer, he built a career in broadcasting with major networks including NBC and CBS, even announcing the Academy Awards in the early days of radio.

In 1959, he co-founded Holloway House, his Los Angeles–based publishing company that became culturally influential for championing African American writers at a time when mainstream publishing largely overlooked them. The company’s groundbreaking titles reached wide audiences and left a lasting imprint on American culture.

A longtime Beverly Hills resident, Morriss shared 72 years of marriage with his wife Sonia, raising their family while enjoying a life rich in travel, culture, and community. Known for his commanding voice,

humor, and generosity, he left

behind a legacy that bridges media, literature, and Los Angeles history.

Set inside one of Trousdale’s iconic mid-century homes, his quintessentially Hollywood Regency assortment includes:

– Statement furniture with bold lines and undeniable presence

– Layered decor and objets d'art that

defined an era

– A rich and extensive library—shelves upon shelves of incredible books

– Ladies’ and gentlemen’s fashion and accessories spanning decades

And for those who appreciate the ultimate finishing touch, there's a 1975 Mercedes Benz 450 SL Convertible—timeless, iconic, and ready for its next chapter.
