FAMILY BIO:
Ron was born January 27, 1930, in the East Bronx, New York City. He was forever a true Bronx boy and carried a hint of that accent throughout his entire life.
Born in 1931 in Cincinnati, Ohio, Betty and her parents moved to Batavia, Ohio in 1933 where she lived on the family farm with her beloved stream behind the house.
Betty and Ron met in 1952 in San Diego. He was a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corp. stationed in San Diego and saw Betty while roller skating at Belmont Park. It was love at first sight and they were married the same year. They were married for 55 wonderful years!
In 1958, with first son James, they moved to Escondido at 2045 Lee Drive. The birth of their second son Richard quickly followed. Ron and Betty loved everything about Escondido’s small town feel and that love for the community never changed. Ron said in a newspaper article about Escondido, “I soon learned that Escondido was warmth, friendliness, and good fellowship. For a boy from the Bronx, Escondido represented the dreams of my childhood.”
In 1960, Ron joined the Escondido Police Department and loved being a cop. He was a kind, compassionate, humble police officer and retired as lieutenant in 1990.
Betty’s career in banking began in 1952 when she worked for First National Bank in downtown San Diego. Betty continued her banking career while in Escondido and was employed by Home Federal Savings and Loan for a number of years.
Both Ron and Betty were passionate about making a difference in the Escondido community. Ron joined the Escondido Kiwanis Club in 1970 and remained an active member the rest of his life. He loved animals and was actively involved with the Escondido Humane Society as a Board Member and Chair. Betty was especially proud of her long-time association with the Palomar Medical Center Auxiliary. She initially oversaw the Candy Stripers program and later became President of the Auxiliary from 1981-1983. In 1986 she became President of the San Diego Imperial County Council of Hospital Volunteers.
They both pursued a number of hobbies. One that they shared together was collecting memorabilia from the Wizard of Oz. They were active members of the International Wizard of Oz Club. Ron first saw the Wizard of Oz movie in color in 1939, which left him awestruck, and his love for it and Judy Garlandnever wavered.
It was indeed a wonderful and loving life for them. They would be thrilled to know that they can share the history of their life through the Estate sale and would ask you to love and care for these special mementos of lives lived well.
