Auction Description & Narrative Blueprint
This 1967 Austin-Healey 3000 Mk III BJ8 is a highly desirable, late-production Phase Il variant that is offered as a mostly complete, stalled body-off restoration project [cite: 2]. Previously a fantastic weekend driver in Northern California for many years, the car was safely garaged indoors under long-term ownership [cite: 2]. In 2021, the late owner—an experienced and meticulous classic car hobbyist whose past portfolio included the successful restorations of a 1964 Triumph TR4 and a 1966 Mustang-began a comprehensive, body-off refurbishment.
Due to health issues and his subsequent passing, the project was paused in its early phases. The car is now offered by the successor to the estate with a clean California title, historical DMV registration, and a massive, organized cache of components and newly boxed parts [cite: 1, 2].
Chassis, Body, & Structural Integrity
The main rolling chassis and cockpit frame structures are presented in an exceptionally solid, structurally rust-free condition. Having spent its life garaged indoors in the dry San Francisco Bay Area climate, the car has completely avoided the chronic outrigger and main chassis frame rail rot that typical vintage British steel suffers from [cite: 2]. A visual and physical inspection confirms that the lower suspension links, shock towers, inner sills, and floor pans remain straight and structurally intact. The body panels, loose sheet metal components, shroud assemblies, and exterior wings are cataloged and ready for metal preparation and body sorting.
Drivetrain & Mechanical Status
The car retains its authentic 2.9-liter dual-carburetor inline-six engine block and matching manual gearbox. A mechanical inspection suggests both units are structurally sound and complete with correct component accessories.
Crucially, the assembly includes the rare and highly coveted factory heavy-duty overdrive unit transmission housing. Both the engine block, cylinder head, and primary gearbox mechanisms have been preserved in clean, dry indoor conditions.
Interior & Included Trim Packages
The sale includes a substantial and sorted cache of original interior fixtures alongside brand-new, boxed replacement elements. The original driver and passenger seat frame assemblies are included and structurally undamaged. A premium, newly boxed complete interior vinyl trim and upholstery kit is bundled with the sale, providing the next caretaker with a direct path to completing a beautiful cockpit space.
"The vehicle and its comprehensive accompanying parts inventory are safely housed at our facility in Moraga, California [cite: 2]. While the executor is managing the estate logistics from a distance, we are fully committed to absolute transparency [cite: 1, 3]. We warmly invite and encourage local San Francisco Bay Area enthusiasts or professional inspectors to coordinate a visual check of the rust-free frame rails and parts bins during the active auction window [cite: 2]. The vehicle is sold strictly as-is to settle the estate asset line [cite: 1]."
