Description & Details

I'm hosting a gargantuan book sale on July 25. After more than 55 years in the same home, my parents have finally agreed to start letting go of their overflowing book library. My dad had a stroke this year, my mom has early Alzheimer's and we're beginning to face the realities (and costs) of long-term care. Selling most of the books they've collected over a lifetime is one small step in that process. It’s been an honor perusing all of their book children over the past weeks. I can’t wait to give them new homes.

When I say they loved books...I mean they really loved books. They also happened to be serious collectors (and, admittedly, a little bit hoarders). There are over 1,500 books.

My mom has read just about every novel your book club has talked about over the past 30 years. Lessons in Chemistry? Yep. AND... Elin Hildebrand, John Grisham, Barbara Kingsolver, Jodi Picoult, Anna Quindlen, Ann Patchett, Liz Gilbert, Kent Haruf, Robertson Davies, Julia Glass, Celeste Ng, Sue Miller, Anne Tyler, Tracy Kidder, Colleen Hoover, Emily Henry, Julia Child, Ruth Reichl, Calvin Trillin, Elizabeth Strout, Jane Smiley, Jane Hamilton, Anita Shreve, Richard Russo, Russell Banks, Toni Morrison. Shelves and shelves of fiction, mysteries, biographies, memoirs, classics, and contemporary favorites.

She was also an art teacher and an incredible art lover. Her collection of art books is honestly breathtaking. There are hundreds of gorgeous books on Van Gogh, Picasso, Monet, Manet, Mondrian, Gauguin, Andrew Wyeth, Richard Diebenkorn, Chagall, Miro, Debussy, Seurat, Toulouse-Latrec, Leger, Magritte, Modigliani, Klee, Homer, Haring, Rodrigue, Gilhooly, Rodin, Calder, Gilhooly, Michelangelo, Munch, Hockney, Hundertwasser, Frank Lloyd Wright, architecture, design, museums, and more. Some of these art books would make very pretty coffee table books. And if you are an art teacher or know an art teacher, this sale is a MUST.

My dad was fascinated by history, sailing, exploration, war, and disasters. Looking for a book about Arctic expeditions? Civil War battles? Shipwrecks? Naval history? Chances are, it's here. There are about 300 books focused on sailing, boats and adventures at sea. So many books about shipwrecks.

They have a lot of collectibles in fancy hard covers. EBay and my scanning app tells me some of them are worth something. There are a TON of modern library books from the 50’s. We have old Faulkner, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Wolfe, Steinbeck, Salinger, Wouk, Twain and so many more. I think there are roughly 50 first editions of books from the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.

We have full series of books, like all of the James Bond/Ian Fleming books. And the Patrick O'Brian series, all 20 in mint condition. Louisa May Alcott’s full series, the full works of Shakespeare, Eugene O’Neil, Steinbeck, the Modern Library Classics, and more.

Most books will be just $1–5, there will be a huge FREE section, and some collectible and rare editions that will be priced higher, but at a huge discount from what I see online. A portion of the proceeds will go toward my parents' long-term care, and we'll also be donating a portion to The Alzheimer's Association.

If you're hunting for a specific author, series, or collectible, feel free to message me.
