TOM CULVER: BEHIND THE SCENES AND IN THE SPOTLIGHT

A member of Motion Picture Costumers, IATSE Local 705, Tom built a long career in film and television, working alongside costume designers and maintaining close relationships across the costume community. His credits included The Love Boat, Love Boat: The Next Wave and Murder, She Wrote, as well as Mobsters, Town & Country, Purpose and Mike Nichols’s What Planet Are You From? His collection reflects both a working costumer’s appreciation of the craft and a lifelong affection for Hollywood’s personalities, clothes and visual history.

Tom’s love of Hollywood also found its way into books. He edited The Murder, She Wrote Cookbook, bringing together recipes from the cast and crew, and wrote They Did It With Their Clothes On, exploring glamour and seduction on the silver screen. At the time of his passing, he was working on a book about costume designer Yvonne Wood.

Cabaret was another great love. A singer and songwriter as well as a storyteller, Tom performed in Los Angeles cabaret rooms, including The Gardenia, where his show Thanks for the Memory was recorded live. His album Duke’s Place celebrated the music of Duke Ellington, with producer and fellow singer Mark Winkler joining him for a duet on Caravan. Behind the scenes or at the microphone, Tom brought Hollywood history and the American songbook into the same wonderfully individual world.
