Description & Details

The Estate of Amos Hargrave – Master Luthier

Pacific Auction is honored to present the estate of Amos Hargrave, one of the most respected and accomplished violin makers ever to emerge from the American violin-making tradition.

Amos began his career under the guidance of Peter Prier, remaining with him until 1979 before joining Jacques Francais Rare Violins Inc. in New York. There, he spent three years refining his restoration skills under the legendary René Morel. He later became Chief Restorer for Eric Chapman Violins before establishing his own workshop in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1983.

In 1990, Amos relocated his studio to the Aspen area of Colorado, where he focused on instrument making while serving musicians attending the renowned Aspen Music Festival and School. He later settled in Kansas, where he continued his life's work and mentorship of future generations of craftsmen.

Among his many accomplishments, Amos earned four Gold Medals from the Violin Society of America and achieved the prestigious Hors Concours designation. He was also a founding member of the International Society of Bassists Makers Competition, serving for many years as both a judge and mentor to countless instrument makers around the world.

Within this catalog, collectors, musicians, and craftsmen will discover an extraordinary selection of rare and vintage tonewoods, premium tools from celebrated makers such as Lie-Nielsen and Garrett Wade, complete instruments, partially finished works, and projects that remained on Mr. Hargrave's bench at the time of his passing. The offering also includes an exceptional selection of bows, cases, workshop equipment, and countless materials accumulated over a lifetime devoted to the art of violin making.

This is more than a luthier's auction—it is a remarkable archive of creativity, craftsmanship, and dedication. Each lot represents a chapter in the life and work of a master maker whose influence continues to resonate throughout the violin-making community. We are privileged to offer this collection and invite you to participate in preserving and celebrating the legacy of Amos Hargrave.
