 Oil painting, 18th c., Jan Jozef Horemans 1714-1792 [believe the Younger, due sharply delineated figures],  bought from Salomon Lilian, Amsterdam, specialized dealer in Old Masters (1989). 81cm w x 60cm h.

 A series of framed plates from an herbal by Johann Wilhelm Weinmann, (here plate 446, Cucurbita fruchtu) Phytanthoza Iconographia. Ratisbon (Regensburg): 1737-45 Mezzotint engravings printed in color and finished by hand at time of publication. 15-½ x 18-¼”. (Abbreviated J.W.Weinm). The set (eight folios, over 1000 plates) is regarded for the quality of it’s plates and accuracy, it is the first important botanical work to use color engraved prints. The new mezzotint process was employed, allowing fine details in shade and color. Georg Dionysius Ehret illustrated with Seuter and Ridinger managing first volumes, followed by Haid. (Engravers Bartholomew Seuter, Johann Elias Ridinger and Johann Jakob Haid) The descriptions for plates 1-73, Johann Georg Nicolaus Dieterichs, plates 76-525 by Ludwig Michael Dieterichs and Ambrosius Karl Bieler. Index compiled by Herman Boerhaave and Johann Burmann.
