Harry Schaare (1922–2008) was a highly accomplished American painter and illustrator best known for his dynamic and versatile work across book covers, magazines, and fine art. Born in New York City, Schaare studied architecture at New York University before graduating from the prestigious Pratt Institute in 1947. He also served as a pilot in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II—an experience that influenced much of his later work.
Schaare built a prolific career illustrating for major publications including Reader’s Digest, Sports Illustrated, Boys’ Life, and Aviation Week, while also creating artwork for countless book covers across a wide range of genres. His ability to capture movement, emotion, and storytelling made his work instantly recognizable and widely sought after.
In the mid-1970s, Schaare transitioned into the fine art world, gaining recognition in Western art galleries and eventually relocating to Arizona, where he continued to paint. His body of work spans everything from dramatic Western scenes and aviation subjects to sports and narrative illustrations, showcasing his remarkable range and technical skill.
