_____________________________________________________________________
Long before Arden Mays Merckle Jr. was born in 1964, his great grandfather was the first mayor of Plant City back in the 1800s. With family names that most people in Plant City would know, and streets and parks named after some of them, even city municipalities sitting on land that once belonged to his ancestors, this upcoming estate which dates back over 1oo years, is one that has already begun to draw a lot of interest and buzz, both locally around town, as well as throughout Hillsborough County and beyond.
A couple of years ago, after Arden's grandparents both passed away, Federico and Katherine Mays Martinez, the family had to clear out the grandparent's home, also in Plant City (out in Cork). Now with the unfortunate passing of Arden Mays Jr earlier this year, there will also now be an estate sale to liquidate the extensive belongings of Arden's home as well.
From the street, the house appears like any other....
but as soon as you walk through the doors, it is a FEAST for the eyes!!
Arden Jr was an accomplished artist, to say the least, and a phenomenal interior decorator in Atlanta for nearly 20 years, before moving back to Plant City to care for his aging mother, Neva, at the time.
From his marbled pillars in the grand entry, to his breath-taking murals on the bathroom ceiling, to his masterpiece paintings of each of the 50 states, to his one of a kind unique architectural sketches, to his large detailed wooden valances and ornate window treatments....
it's OBVIOUS that this amazing man was EXTREMELY TALENTED!!!
The home is filled with antiques of all sorts, as well as photographs of the family ancestors. Large beautiful antique picture frames that will be for sale also, some still holding photographs dating back more than a century. Rowena Mays Park, at the corner of Baker and Alexander, was named after Arden's great-grandmother. There is an original photograph of her in a large antique frame in the house here, as well as her husband, Samuel Edward Mays, the first mayor of Plant City. If you come to just browse, the history alone will fascinate you, not to mention the amazing contents of this extraordinary home!
AND THEN.........
THERE WAS
HALLOWEEN!!!!!!!!!
"Mays", as he was affectionately known by his close friends and family, LOVED Halloween!!! For nearly 8 years, he had Plant City's largest and most well-known Halloween walk-through at his "HAUNTED MANSION" on Bridle Drive. Giant creepy columns with glowing green lights will greet you as you enter the home for the estate sale. Tombstones and goulish pictures are also throughout the home. There is even a life-size MUMMY and a life-size Egyptian sarcophagus, oh and an upright "wooden" coffin with a skeleton climbing out of it! After you've shopped in all of the other rooms of the house, be sure to enter the "DUNGEON" (garage) complete with faux "stained glass" cathedral windows and spooky creatures lurking almost everywhere you turn...... (not to mention lots of tools too)
See his 2012 HALLOWEEN WALK-THROUGH VIDEO LINK BELOW. He uploaded it to YouTube back then. It's amazing! Most all of the contents that you see in the video ARE for sale!
And as if that wasn't enough.....
WALT DISNEY and MAYS both had the same love for a big red mouse named M-I-C-K-E-Y! There aren't too many pictures of Mays throughout the home, where he isn't smiling. His love for all things Disney, was part of his kind, compassionate heart and the "child within all of us" that friends and family say was just who Mays was. "He loved to entertain and see other people happy!" A large collection of neat vintage Disney Land and Disney World maps will be for sale, dating back to the 1950s, 60s and 70s, as well as some vintage Disney books depicting the parks and their history. Even an Epcot Center map and a special limited edition "Epcot Opening Day" admission ticket from 1982.
AGAIN, THIS IS ONE OF THOSE ESTATE SALES.....
THAT YOU DEFINITELY DON'T WANT TO MISS!
People will be talking about this one for a long time to come!!!
