Roetter worked in Switzerland until 1845, when he emigrated to the United States, and eventually settled in St. Louis. ''The Matterhorn'', an oil on canvas he did in 1860 is on permanent display at Saint Louis University. Through George Engelmann, a physician and botanist, Roetter became interested in natural history, and produced a large number of drawings of biological specimens. Some of Roetter's original drawings are in Shaw's Museum and ''recognized by authorities as being among the finest ever made.''
