African American Folk Art. This piece painted in mid to late 1970s, Alabama, USA
Artist: Mose Tolliver (signed Mose T) born ca 1920 - died 2006
Painted on composite board, like you would find on the back of a dresser or drawer bottom - Mose is known for painting on whatever he could find. The hanging "hardware" is 3 pop tops.
Appears to be oil-based paint. Also know to use latex house/wall paint from cans.
APPROXIMATELY 29" x 15" (will post actual measurements soon)
This multi-figural painting shows various skin colors. I notice the black and brown skin figures holding hands, while the lighter one is separate. I wonder what might have prompted this painting. He did many self-portraits and family portraits.
Provenance: This work was acquired by my client's mother directly from the artist, Mose Tolliver. She noticed him drawing and painting sometimes while he waited to pick up his (grand)daughter at the school where she taught about 40 years ago, before his art became known. One day she inquired about his work and acquired this painting and one of his watermelon paintings*. My client remembers going to the artist's home with his brother and mother.
Mr. Tolliver's work is in the Smithsonian National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, included in the Corcoran Gallery exhibit Black Folk Art in America 1930- 1980 and is now in galleries and museums around the world.
