James Andrew "Harold" Newton was born in Gifford, Florida on October 30, 1934. He moved to Tifton, Georgia at an early age, where he attended Industrial Elementary and High School. In 1954, at age 20, he returned to Gifford where he began his painting career.
Through the years, Harold lived and painted all over the state of Florida. He never settled down for a long period of time in one place. This is the reason his paintings can be found widely distributed throughout the state, not because he was a "highwayman". ..
Harold painted until he became ill in 1993. He passed away in June of 1994. Harold is one of the more "prolific" of the Highwaymen Artists. His artwork commands high prices from collectors of all sorts. We have sold numerous works by Harold over the years and his "older" paintings are rare AND coveted!
Harold Newton and his brothers Sam and Lem are probably among the best known of the Highwaymen Artists. Originally from Georgia, they moved to the Ft. Pierce
