Benson Estate Sale: Historic Family Generational Collection

Benson Estate Sales presents an historic Family multi-generational collection drawn from two legendary Georgia addresses: Twin Oaks, the c. 1855 National Register Greek Revival estate in Greenville, GA., and Rhodes Hall — the iconic "castle on Peachtree Street" that served as the Georgia State Archives from 1930 to 1965. The collection comes to you in part from that of Louise Frederick Hays (1881–1951), the wife of Senator James E. Hays. Louise was Georgia's State Archivist and Historian, the first woman in the United States to receive an honorary degree for volunteer work, and one of the most consequential figures in the preservation of Georgia's documentary heritage. She lived at Rhodes hall from 1939 until 1951 many of these pieces are from her collection passed down through the generations. Her daughter Louese Frederick Hays Gaston and son-in-law Dr. Joseph H. Gaston lll M.D. Then to their son Dr. J. Harper Gaston M.D. and his wife Anne Elizabeth Hendrick Gaston M.D. Dr. Gaston is known for his work at Emory University where he was a physician and founding director of the Southeast Kaiser Permanente Medical Group. He and his wife retired to Twin Oaks, his ancestorial home, where they accumulated a collection of beautiful antiques and collectibles. Held in private storage for years, this collection has never been for sale. These collections include antique and vintage furniture, art, paintings, jewelry, costume jewelry, vintage designer clothing, fine porcelains and crystal, silver, antique lighting, decorative arts, rare books, historic maps, and major bodies of Louise Frederick Hays' personal archive and research materials.
