SANDY SPRINGS UMC's HISTORY – Sandy Springs’ oldest United Methodist church will shed some major pounds this month at its Activities Center. Founded in 1848, the Sandy Spring (GA) United Methodist Church is located at the corner of Mount Vernon Highway and the Activity Center (built in 1986) is located across the street at 6150 Sandy Springs Circle. Estate sale doors open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. during sale dates October 19-21.
Sometime between 1849 and 1851, five acres were given by Wilson Spruill and a log cabin was constructed, enabling the members to worship year-round for the first time. This structure also served as the community school. The congregation continued to worship in the log cabin until the Civil War ended and a white frame building was constructed on the site where the bell tower now stands.
Camp meetings, which continued well into the Twentieth Century were an integral part of the growth of the Sandy Springs United Methodist Church. Hundreds of people attended and built “tents” for the ten-day revival. In 1920, the brick structure was built to accommodate the congregation. The church continued to grow with 250 members in 1940.
SSUMC saw phenomenal growth, with a membership of 500 in the mid-1950s, as the area around Sandy Springs prospered. Growth continued in the 1960s, with the construction of its current worship space in 1961.
The ministry capabilities of the church were increased again by the construction of the Activities Center which was built in memory of Ricky Hitson in 1986. Today, Sandy Springs United Methodist Church is an active, mission-oriented congregation that strives to reach out not only to those in our community, but also to people in need around the world.
While the Estate Sale is in preparation for the sale of the recreation property, Sandy Springs UMC will continue its vibrant ministry on the corner of Mount Vernon Highway, according to Rev. Kate Floyd, SSUMC’s pastor.
"However, our exclusive space will be significantly reduced, and we must dispose of most of the physical property that has accumulated in such a large building over the years. This church has touched so many families. We hope that people will come out and purchase a piece of its legacy,” said Rev. Floyd.
