Often called "the peoples historian" Bennett was a trusted and revered scholar! His books, poems and short stories have been translated into 6 different languages. He is the author of more than 10 books that speak to the Black Experience in the USA. He's received numerous awards, letters and honors, one of the highest being the "MLK, Salute to Greatness" award.
