- A rare Worcester Porcelain (Flight) lidded sauce tureen with stand from the ‘Hope service’ circa 1792, signed with blue crowned script Flight and open crescent marks, painted by John Pennington. The celebrated 'Hope' service was commissioned by the Duke of Clarence and St Andrews (later King William IV), in January 1790, and was completed just over a year later. The Neo-Classical service consists of a soft-paste porcelain base, with a bold blue underglaze lobed border, with gilt patterae, and gilt arched panels and stars. The centre cartouche artwork features the Greek mythological Hope, painted in monochrome using the French-inspired grisaille style. Across the set, Hope is depicted in a variety of poses with an anchor, and often with a ship in the distance. The Duke of Clarence was affectionately nicknamed the ‘Sailor King’ when he came to the throne, as he had joined the Royal Navy at the young age of 13 as a midshipman; some speculated that he chose the “Hope” pattern with the ships at sea in a tribute to Horatio Nelson, in addition to a nod at his own Royal Navy service.
