Abbott Fuller Graves (1859-1936) American Painter. Oil on canvas painting,
14" x 18", signed lower right Abbott Graves. Label on verso from Richard Love Galleries, with size and title "Garden House-Gloucester". This is an image with a
garden in front of a home, and a bay with a boat and a landscape background.
Born in Weymouth, Massachusetts, Abbott Fuller Graves was an influential Boston painter known for his floral garden scenes and still lifes. Although much of his work, in keeping with the Boston School style, depicted subject matter in a realistic way, his thick, impasto brush strokes and bright, colorful sun-lit paintings showed his acceptance of Impressionism. In 1884, he went to Paris and Italy, and concentrated on still life painting. Returning to Boston in 1885, he became a member of the faculty of the Cowles Art School where fellow-faculty member Childe Hassam, an impressionist, became an influence on his work. In 1887, Graves returned to Paris where he enrolled at the Academie Julian to study figure painting with Jean Paul Laurens. From 1891, most of his paintings were of floral garden scenes, often with female figures in bright sunlight--showing the influence of European impressionism. In 1891, he opened his own art school in Boston which ultimately moved to Kennebunkport, Maine and closed in 1902.
Examples of Graves's work can be found in public and private collections across the country, including the Mead Art Museum at Amherst College, the Arnot Art Museum, Elmira, New York; the Brick Store Museum, Kennebunk, Maine; Ball State University Museum of Art, Muncie, Indiana; the Hermitage Foundation Museum, Norfolk, Virginia; and the Princeton University Art Museum.
The artist's work is actively sold through auction and galleries. Two paintings of Graves' were sold at Skinner's of Boston, on 9/9/11. A 14" x 20" painting, of cows at pasture with a schooner & lighthouse sold for $13,000, and an 18" x 14" of a young Breton girl in a summer garden, with some condition issues, sold for $9,500, both without buyer's premium. At Doyle's of New York on November 11, 2009, a 13" x 19" painting titled "Along the Garden Path", sold for $7000, also minus buyer's premium. Year 2009 reflects the hangover of the American recession.
The subject piece is typical of the artist oeuvre. There has been some contraction on prices, with several pieces unsold at auction reflecting the current market. Yet Graves is still a top-tier artist who's had many works sold at six figure sums.
We offer delivery and set up just ask us about it at the sale this weekend in Glencoe!
