Description & Details
The Estate of Mr. & Mrs. Allan B. Calhamer, Inventor of the Board Game "Diplomacy"
From the New York Times: "Mr. Calhamer conceived Diplomacy at Harvard in the mid-1950s, and from the start its object was simple: to achieve world domination in as many hours (or days, or even years) as it takes. Released commercially in 1959, Diplomacy has sold more than 300,000 copies. It was reported to have been a favorite game of Henry Kissinger; John F. Kennedy and Walter Cronkite were also said to enjoy it. In 1984 it was named to Games magazine’s Hall of Fame, alongside stalwarts like Monopoly, Clue and Scrabble. Over the years, Diplomacy — “Dip” to its most fervent adherents — has inspired a welter of fanzines, international tournaments and, most recently, online competitions."
After retiring from the U.S. Postal Service, Mr. Calhamer enjoyed life as an artist. At the sale you will find a home FILLED with eclectic items from art to books to antiques & collectibles, vintage games & toys!
For bookbuyers/hunters: The majority of books in this collection are non-fiction history and politics. Many are stamped with Mr. Calhamer's library stamp, some are ex-library - all are in no particular order and are spread all over the house. Book prices will be: Vintage/antique books and large hardcover books $5 (unless marked individually), regular hardcover books $3, softcover books $2 and paperbacks $1. Half-price day is Sunday.
On the main level we have a wall of books in the dining room and an office filled with more books and office supplies, a beautiful 4-shelf lawyer's/barrister bookcase, a nice dining table with buffet, a roll top desk and secretaries desk, vintage/antique dressers, kitchenwares, lots of knick-knacks, vases, figurines and smalls, costume jewelry, collectible newspapers and postcards, a large pinback button collection, the basement has been turned into a semi art-gallery displaying the many paintings and wood "hanging sculptures" by Mr. Calhamer, along with more books and several vintage toys including Fisher Price playhouses, school desks and two Marx Big Wheels! On the top floor you will find many more books, vintage games and puzzles, dolls and doll cribs, two twin 4-poster beds (1 with a canopy), 1980's LP's and cassettes, 1980's magazines including Rolling Stone, GQ, Cosmopolitan and Seventeen, David Bowie, Billy Idol and Adam Ant posters, vintage stuffed animals, sheet music and so much more - quite an interesting sale that you won't want to miss!
Also available a 1992 Mercury Tracer with 100K miles, runs but needs a battery. $1200
