The Goddess of Rogers Park!
Ms Alison Zehr
LEVEL UP ESTATE SALE
I spent my formative years in Rogers Park. 1339 W. Lunt to be exact. This is full circle for me (Lynn). Our home was right down the street from Alison Zehr. And what a lovely estate this is ladies and gentlemen! I'll get to the goodies in just a moment. I simply must share with you Alison's Zehr's amazing life! When Ty and I arrived to do the walk through, the entire visit just felt good! We all talked and walked the estate and figured out the game plan. As we (Ty and I) begin to delve into the estate, we began uncovering, art, jewelry, sterling, vintage hats, sheet music, etc. But then folks began telling us little tidbits about Alison. Some people have a hellleva calling. Alison was one of them. Read below...

Still with us? Read this note from her Bestie Dan:
We met in 2006 at a community garden event in Rogers Park. Less than 2 years later, I was serving on
the organizing committee after Alison approached me about needing someone to act as treasurer for
the Rogers Park Garden Group – an organization that was founded by Alison, Karen, Pam, and other
friends in the neighborhood. Alison loved to garden. The group even had a grants program, which
Alison chaired, to encourage neighbors to garden in the public way by giving them money for plants and
supplies. Grant recipients would garden in parkways, corners of intersections, and create small
community gardens. She was very much a part of the Rogers Park community and many knew who she
was and what she did to make our community that much better.
Alison made a career as a consultant to non-profit organization promoting all sorts of arts and
community programs. She was a loyal supporter of all arts. She was an artist herself. She made and
sold jewelry. She painted. She knitted, sewed, and weaved. She made paper and paper art including
books and book covers. She COLLECTED art. Her apartment is a true reflection of someone who
loved working with and being around visual and usable art. She painted the top of her coffee table one
day just because it looked like it needed something interesting instead of the old leather top. She made
all the curtains in her apartment using expensive linen in glorious patterns. Her style was eclectic but
very curated.
Alison was a voracious reader. So much so, that there were books in every room. She cooked, so there
were lots of cookbooks with flags in them and notes indicating recipes she tried and comments on how
they worked out. She loved history, so there were many books reflecting history of just about anything.
She was the organizer of a non-fiction book club in which I participated. I may have only read every
other book that was suggested by the group as a whole, but I always made an effort to read her pick. It
must be relevant and important if she picked it out. She loved fiction mostly. She even wrote her own
stories and formed a writers group where everyone would write a short story based on a certain theme
chosen by a member of the group. I am a proud owner of one of her short story books with stories by
her and her sister, Judy. The cover and endpapers were handmade by Alison.
I spent many hours with Alison in her apartment. She had so many family heirlooms. I often thought
that she must be the family historian or conservator of sorts based on her collection of fine and often
expensive antiques. Things most people haven’t seen in their lifetime. But things that were both
beautiful and still function in today’s world. Alison had an eye for quality, the unusual, the whimsical,
and the functional – oftentimes all wrapped up into one piece.
I can truly say that Alison was the most interesting person I knew and I treasured our friendship. She
was skilled, smart, thoughtful, kind, artistic, generous, and kind. She had a great sense of humor – both
in telling her own stories – often the same many times over, but still just as funny – and hearing stories
from her very large circle of friends and having a rousing laugh. She loved her vodka martinis dry and
very, very cold. I loved to make her a martini. Ice floating on the top. Just like she wanted. With two
blue cheese stuffed olives. I believe she lived a very good life. A purposeful life. A life filled with joy and
experimentation and loving friendship to many.
Till soon! xo
