Mark Coomer was born in Bay City, Michigan in 1914 and received his formal artistic training in Chicago and Detroit. Coomer is best known for his “washable” serigraph prints depicting urban scenes and patio scapes. He also produced several paintings of Western and Mexican landscapes between the years 1946-1947. Coomer started out working as an illustrator creating drawings for publications such as “Columnists: While We're Still Around” by Garret Mathews as well as working for the Evansville Courier & Press. It wasn’t until 1952 during a trip with his wife Sally to La Porte, Indiana that he began to work with a print company to sell his serigraphs. He would produce 100 of each subject to create genuine limited edition works of art. The majority of these prints were produced on Masonite with only twenty-four compositions rendered on paper. A unique quality of Coomer’s works on Masonite is that they were “washable” due to the use of premiant oil paint rather than ink. Later in life, Coomer moved to Arizona and passed away in 2004. His work has been exhibited and house in numerous institutions including the Chicago Art Institute; Challis Galleries, Laguna Beach, California; and The West and Walter-Bimson Western Art Collection housed at the University of Arizona Museum of Art.
