Bertha Eveyln Clausen Jaques, born in Covington, Ohio in 1863, was of historic importance in the field of etching in the United States, as she almost single-handedly initiated the etching revival in the 20th Century. It was through the Chicago Society of Etchers, which she organized and led, that etching became a serious medium for artists, creating reasonably priced works the public might more easily acquire.
Jaques organized two Society traveling exhibitions a year, often co-sponsored by the Art Institute of Chicago, during her twenty-seven year tenure as the secretary-treasurer of the Society of Etchers. Her etchings, many of them floral and botanic subjects, along with those of the artist membership, were exhibited widely at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; University of Chicago Art Gallery, Illinois; New York Public Library, New York City; Detroit's PublicHand-colored Drypoint on Paper by Bertha E Jacques Biography from the Archives of askART

An active member of the Wild Flower Preservation Society, she created over a thousand of these botanical images. [See Dandelion Seeds, Taraxacium Officinale, SAAM, 1994.91.89] Made without a camera by placing objects directly on sensitized paper and exposing it to light, the photogram is the least industrialized type of photography. Because prints were easy to produce by this method, it achieved wide popularity. Graphic artists often chose this form of print because of its rich Prussian blue color. Aligned with the antimodernist views of the late Victorian Arts and Crafts movement, Jaques's work reflects a reverence for commonplace elements of nature and the beautifully crafted object.Sale Picture1 Drawer Side Table, MahoganySale PictureArt GlassArt GlassQueen Comforter SetPowerMax Self-propelled Hoover VacuumSale PictureMahogany Floor MirrorSewing Rocker Antique OakBrass LampPillows that match queen comforter setTwo outdoor rockers and small round tableVintage Solid Maple Drop-leaf Tea CartRound Mahogany Table with pads for table Sprague & Carleton BuffetTall, Excellent Corner Cupboard -- goes to ceiling, Approx 7'Sale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureNoritake "Spectrum" Vintage China SetNoritake "Spectrum" Vintage China SetSale PictureElegant Crystal Goblets and WinesSale PictureSale PictureSale PicturePair Pewter Candlesticks
