This auction offers a rare opportunity to own artwork connected to American history, local history, and some fascinating stories.
MASSASOIT INDIAN CHIEF — OIL PAINTING
17th Century
This historic painting was once displayed at the Massasoit Hotel in Spencer, Massachusetts, which opened in 1873 as a stopping place for stagecoaches. The hotel was named in honor of Massasoit, Chief of the Wampanoag, whose relationship with the early settlers remains an important part of American history.
According to the history associated with the painting, on October 22, 1789, George Washington's family donated the painting in his memory, recognizing the historic relationship between Washington and the tribe.
The Massasoit Hotel also had a connection to John F. Kennedy, who reportedly visited the hotel while campaigning.
When the hotel was destroyed by fire in 1982, this remarkable painting was salvaged from the debris, preserving a piece of the hotel's history.
🖼️ PILGRIM — 18th CENTURY OIL PAINTING
Another exceptional historical piece, this 18th-century oil painting, is signed and was reframed in 1890.
These aren't simply paintings—they are pieces of history with stories that have traveled through generations.
