Some background information to Dr Purple Nancy

The Purple Lady......

Her 1st house the Green's Inheritance was featured in the Charles County Bicentennial OLD HOME TOUR in 1975.  You can look at the photo's online of articles that were written and published in magazine, newspapers and books.  Photo's dating back to 1975 so many of the artifacts in the photos we have for sale today in this up coming sale.  The house she now owns in Annapolis was decorated by the cast that designed the set for the Jungle Book and Lion King.  It is designed to look to be a hut and you can tell as soon as you walk in the front door.

In 1981 she was appointed to the Maryland Arts Council by Governer Harry Hughes

In 1984 she founded VSA ARTS OF MARYLAND, INC.

Enter Nancy Carsey's North Baltimore co-op and you're in a parallel universe, one that's decorated in infinite hues of purple, (even her piano is purple) and peopled by larger-than-life-size statues from Africa, Oceania and other faraway places.

An affection for African art inspired one designer to transform a dark, English-style library into a fanciful gathering room where treasures from Africa and elsewhere could be lived with and enjoyed. This exotic library was designed by Elizabeth K. Piper, managing design director of Michael Asner Associates Inc., in cooperation with senior designer Karen Aumen.

The designers, inspired by the dazzling colors and patterns of African textiles, and carpets from Afghanistan, elected first to simplify the background of the room. They lightened the floor with a pale sisal carpet, and painted the walls a brilliant teal.

The setting presents an ideal background for the riot of pattern taken from the unusual array of African and New Guinea art and artifacts. These rare pieces represent a small portion of the personal collection of Dr. Nancy Stevens Carsey, executive director of Very Special Arts of Maryland. Turn-of-the-century and earlier furnishings, which reflect the period of African colonialism, are from Gaines/McHale antiques.

The effect is a bit overwhelming. And so is Carsey. The director of Very Special Arts Maryland, a non-profit arts program for people with disabilities, is herself a vision in purple, plum and fuchsia. Save for the occasional detour to black, Carsey, who would prefer to discuss her "experience" rather than her age, buys clothing based on purpleness.

If she enters a store, and no purple is to be found, she leaves.

"It makes shopping easy," she says. No wonder the children who attend school near her office greet Carsey with, "Hi, Purple Lady!"

Where do you shop?

Anywhere I can find purple. If there's purple pieces in the window, I run in.

What is it about purple?

I put it on and I feel like a princess. It's very calming to me.

Do you indulge in purple around the world?

I got a purple gown in Hong Kong that I wore frequently on a cruise. And in Bombay, at an auction on the cruise ship, I bought a purple sari and this incredible two-piece gown that weighs close to 30 pounds that's black and embroidered with real gold thread. I'm going to put a purple lining in the jacket.

Isn't it hard to hold up all that weight?

It balances well around my hips. It's actually easy to wear.

What kind of purse do you use with a dress like that?

I have this brass bag from Turkey that women use for storing their soap and wash cloth. It's the prettiest little thing.

What purple accessories do you have?

A purple wig and a purple Santa hat. I wore the hat to my literary group last night to make sure they were cheered up for the holidays. And I have a lot of amethyst. It's very healing.

Do you have a law of fashion?

It doesn't matter if it's a good year or a bad year for purple, it's always a good year for me.

Describe those silver bracelets in the kitchen cupboard underneath the purple wine goblets.

Those are pieces I've collected from Tibet, Turkey, India and American Indian silversmiths.

You seem to have one of those inveterate collectible temperaments.

Even when I was a little child, I collected dolls.

ONE THING  IS CERTAIN TO ME FROM WHAT I HAVE READ AND LEARNED ABOUT THE "THE PURPLE LADY", SHE PUT HER HEART IN EVERYTHING SHE DID AND ALL THOSE WHOSE LIVES SHE HAS TOUCHED.  IT SHOWS IN HER LOVE AND APPRECIATION FOR HER ART COLLECTION AND ALL OF HER ACCOMPLISHMENTS.

We will ship to any place in the United States.  We will meet a shipper you choose to ship large items.  I will take any smaller items and art work  purchased to Fed Ex then you can call the facility directly and arrange for shipment.  I will box and ship items if they are not extremely breakable and can be shipped fairly easy.

If you break it you buy it. (no exceptions)

Please do not handle items.  If you need to see something please ask a team member.

(The Ndebele are among the smallest tribes in South Africa, but are easily the most colorful & distinctive. The women are the sole practitioners of Ndebele art, which represents a rich cultural heritage. Traditionally, these rural women do not read or write & beadwork is their only means of earning an income. The initiation doll is in the traditional dress of an Ndebele married woman, and is a gift from the mother to daughter after the latter has completed her initiation)

This mask depicts a bust of a woman on four legs. Such mask is known as a D'mba headdress, that is by far the most well known Baga work of art. Its use was documented as early as 1886. Africa, Nigeria, Edo, Court of Benin, ca. mid 19th to early 20th century CE. An impressive bronze cast "choker" head depicting an Oba (king of Benin) wearing a netlike coral cap with aliform flaps and a high coral beaded choker. The elaborate coral choker and aliform coral headdress are significant royal court attributes that identify this as the head of an Oba. Size: 7" in diameter x 13.75" H (17.8 cm x 34.9 cm)
The opening at the top of the head was created for elephant teeth or a sculpted elephant tusk carved to depict the many accomplishments of the king. The visage is nicely rendered with thick-lidded open eyes, six decorative scars above them, a straight nose, slightly parted lips, and a row of circular motifs across the cheeks. A piece like this would have been commissioned by a newly enthroned oba to stand on an altar and commemorate a previous oba, most likely his father. The oba of Benin rules via divine right and serves as the being through which his deified royal ancestorThai Foo Dogs 650.00 650.00Sale PictureThe Turkana occupy vast, dry lands in northern Kenya. Their adversarial neighbors the Pokot make and use very similar headrests. This spectacularly large specimen, like all examples of its general type, has been carved from a single, inverted section of timber selected from the crotch of an acacia tree. Two swirls of heartwood are visible at the top of the headrest. By using a natural bifurcation, the headrest's creator took advantage of the wood's diverging grain, creating an especially strong yet lightweight piece of portable furniture capable if necessary of bearing a man's full weight. 70.00175.00TIBETEN TRUMPET 175.00Sale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale Picture Sale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureDesk 425.00 Chair 90.00 Lamps 150.00 pr90.00425.0055.00 Baskets435.00550.00550.00175.00Elephant Sadel Table 70.00Assorted PursesSale Picture45.00 / 25.00150.00Sale PictureSale Picture435.00Sale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureMoorish Chair 450.00Gold Boxes 95.00 Table 65.00 45.00145.00Sale PictureTrunk 100.00 Pictures 95.00 eaSale PictureSale Picture95.00 / 195.00Sale PictureSale PictureSmall 75.00 Large 95.00 45.00, 25.00 and 25.00Sale Picture425.003100.00booksFramesSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale Picture295.00Sale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale Picture25.0025.0025.00FURNITURE 300.00 TV 99.00 MASKED ASSORTED425.00DANISH MODERN WALL UNIT 375.0050.00750.00750.00750.0075.00435.00435.00425.0090.00425.00425.00150.00 pair150.00175.00550.0055.00225.00400.00Sale Picture150.00150.00150.00Sale Picture75.0075.00750.00 set750.00750.00Sale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale Picture15.0010.0040.00Sale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSoutheast Asian Swing 200.00200.00200.00Sale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureRajastahni 650.00650.00650.00Sale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale PictureSale Picture145.00145.0045.00100.00100.00150.00150.00200.00200.0045.0045.0045.0045.0045.0045.0045.00Sale Picture10.00 ea45.0095.00 ea95.0095.00 eaCirca mid 19Th C India Origin Teak, Brass & Iron Dowry Chest with Wood Wheeled Feet.  Bound in Iron and Brass with Brass decoration to the front and domed lid , heavy iron hardware complete this fabulous piece. from Northwest India. 42.5"Hx 49"W x 30.5"D.  Beautiful inside and out. 3500.00Circa mid 19Th C India Origin Teak, Brass & Iron Dowry Chest with Wood Wheeled Feet. Bound in Iron and Brass with Brass decoration to the front and domed lid , heavy iron hardware complete this fabulous piece. from Northwest India. 42.5"Hx 49"W x 30.5"D.  Beautiful inside and out. 3500.00Zao Wou-Ki Chinese artist 5000.00Zao Wou-Ki Chinese artist 5000.00Signed 69 5000.00# 31/95 Hiroyuki Tajma Japanese artist 300.00Hiroyuki Tajma Japaneses artist 300.00Named piece A Evidence A 300.00Signed and dated 300.00Signed and dated. 300.00Signed and dated 300.00750.00750.00225.00150.0040.00Cloths Rack 50.00Carved Bird Mask 95.00Cannibal 40.00145.00Sale Picture75.00Sale PictureSale PictureSale Picture3.003.005.00Sale PictureSale Picture5.00 ea5.00 eaSale PictureSale Picture130.0075.00165.00100.00300.00215.00250.00165.00500.0045.00 ea5.00575.00210.00Belt 175.00 Black and White Bead 210.00Sale Picture575.005.00 ea325.0015.00145.00145.0020.0055.0080.00195.0055.00425.00425.00575.00325.0065.00145.0030.00195100.00100.00bracelet 45.00Necklace 250.00 Belt 225.00Necklace 250.00 Belt 225.00Necklace Broken -
