Description & Details

We are very honored to represent the estate of Sue Marx, a Detroit Icon, Academy-Award winning filmmaker, & self-taught photographer who's photos of everyday Detroit life included portraits of history making figures like Martin Luther King Jr. & Rosa Parks. The Detroit Historical Museum plans an upcoming exhibition of her photographs.

In the late 60's & 70's, Sue worked in local TV news as a producer for "Profiles in Black", which highlighted luminaries such as Detroit Mayor Coleman Young, & Motown stars Marvin Gaye & Stevie Wonder, launching her own production company, Sue Marx Films in 1980. She made documentaries on everything from the restoration of Detroit's Fox Theatre to the public art at People Mover stops to the story of Detroit's Jewish community, amassing many more accolades and awards including a number of Emmys.

Sue Marx had a great eye beyond the camera lens and was also a lover of art, an avid collector and beloved customers of ours for many years.

Her home is filled with a beautiful blend of antiques, traditional, and modern by Harvey Probber, Donghia, Pace, Christian Liaigre, etc. , stunning art & sculpture by Joseph Wesner, Rauschenberg, Picasso, Thomas Hart Benton, etc., and decorative accessories, along with a beautiful antique Steinway Model S baby grand piano.

The sale will also include china, crystal, silver, women's clothing and jewelry, and much more!

Also part of the sale: A collection of oil painted portraits by Michigan artist Louis Gothelf, father of Sue Marx and subject of her 1988 Academy-award winning documentary, “Young at Heart”, including several self portraits, and a beautiful collection of art glass by artist Liz Marx, Sue's daughter.
