Happy New Year everyone!
We are so blessed to be a part of the continuing story of our client and the home in which he grew up! This 1950s/60s Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired ranch home is nestled in a quiet neighborhood on a beautiful wooded hillside...and EVERYTHING having to do with this wonderful estate is Mid-Century Modern, Danish Modern, and pure vintage to its core! It would seem that this home has remained a time capsule, with items ranging from turn-of-the-century furniture and antiques, up through the 1960s - 80s decor. The treasures found inside will astound you, so make sure you come on out to experience the lives and livelihood of true pioneers...people who really lived life!
This is the home where George Gerpheide, "The Father of Touch Technology," grew up. He graduated with the last class at the old Central High, and then received an Electrical Engineering degree from MIT and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Utah. In Utah around 1990, he invented the first commercially successful capacitive finger-touch technology on a shoestring budget in his basement. Apple Computers featured it as the trackpad on their Powerbook computers, as did many other PC manufacturers. The company he founded, Cirque Corporation, eventually lost most of the market to follow-on competitor Synaptics. However, Apple evolved his original technology into a transparent form, and variants are now the touch surfaces of billions of smartphones.
Growing up in the late 1960s, he and his brother John worked the largest Kalamazoo Gazette paper route and used the profits to experiment with all kinds of electronics, including vacuum tubes and early transistors. They even manufactured primitive circuit boards in a too-ambitious project to build their own computer, decades before personal computers hit the scene. Many of these (non-working) old electronics items are available for sale.
