She was forced to join the “League of German Girls”– the equivalent of the better known “Hitler’s Youth Group”. While being bombarded with pro-Hitler propaganda, her great-uncle was helping Jews escape from Germany. She managed to pursue her artistic activities throughout WW II and in 1951 married Michael Ortner, a Jewish death camp survivor. They moved to Oak Park, Michigan to start their family. Harriet founded "Harriet Vickery - Home of the Ballet Arts," a ballet and dance studio in her basement, eventually divorcing and teaching under her new name, Harriet Vickery. Another marriage and she added painting to her creative pursuits.
Historic German theater playbills of the 1940s, German snapshots, German ballet photographs, Promo head shots of Harriet, and Official German Documents.
Original fine art and paintings by Harriet Warnke Vickery.
