ENTRYWAY FOYER & LIVING ROOM,

George W. Ware of Boston Victorian Etagere. One of these is owned by the Virginia Museum of Fine Art's. An étagère with aspects of both the Gothic Revival and Renaissance Revival styles, constructed of black walnut and tulip poplar. The étagère has three graduated shelves on each side, a mirror affixed to the upper section, and a drawer attached to the bottom base. The pediment of the étagère is arched with fretwork of interlaced scrolls and foliage and a Rococo-style motif, of tree nuts and grapes, vines, and foliage, at the top center of the crest. Cove molding, with an additional layer, is applied along the bottom of the pediment. Between the pediment and mirror is a fleur-de-lis, flanked by scrolls, with two roundels. The contour of the étagère has six concave, graduated cutouts, three on each side, and an s-curve from the bottom shelves to the base. The edges of the frame are rounded to match the decorative molding of the shelves and base. The mirror, with rounded, applied molding outlining the glass, is affixed to the upper section of the piece with a pierced panel below. The three shelves are connected by six baluster turned columns, each with a tapered finial at top. The base and thin skirt has a serpentine profile and cove molding. The drawer is marble on top and has a carved wood handle in the shape of leaves. There are four baluster turned legs. Labeled by maker. George W. Ware ran a wholesale and retail firm under his own name from 1862 until about 1875. George A. Goodyear was a partner in this firm between about 1865 and 1872. Ware had previously been a partner in Blake, Ware & Co., furniture retailer and mahogany dealer, from about 1850 to 1861.
