Now onto a little info about Route 66. The Mother Road, (as Route 66 is often called) was officially designated as part of the U.S. Highway System on November 11, 1926. Stretching approximately 2,448 miles, it connected Chicago IL to Santa Monica CA. The route was primarily constructed using existing roads and pathways which varied greatly in quality. It became a crucial thoroughfare for those seeking better travel options across the country. Springfield MO is known as the Birthplace of Route 66. It was in Springfield that a group of local businessmen first proposed the name "Route 66."

In September of 1925, a group of federal planners proposed “Route 60”, from Chicago to Los Angeles. William J. Fields, the governor of Kentucky at that time, was upset at Kentucky’s alienation from other states.  He felt that a transcontinental highway through Kentucky would serve to end the alienation. In 1926, Fields won out, and the new Route 60 would take drivers from Virginia, through Kentucky, and end in Springfield, Missouri. The Chicago – Los Angeles highway was then named “Route 62”.

John T. Woodruff, a Springfieldian entrepreneur, and Cyrus Avery, the Oklahoma Highway Chairman, led a group of federal planners, who disliked the name “Route 62”.  In April of 1926, the group met in Springfield, Missouri at the Colonial Hotel located at the corner of South Jefferson and East St. Louis Street.  (The hotel was demolished in 1997). The group decided that “Route 66” was a catchier name and sounded better than “62.” They sent a telegram from the Colonial Hotel to Washington D.C., which said “Regarding Chicago-Los Angeles Road…if California, Arizona, New Mexico and Illinois will accept Sixty-Six instead of Sixty we are inclined to agree to this change. We prefer Sixty-Six to Sixty-Two.”

A placard on the east side of Park Central Square commemorates Springfield's subsequent 1992 designation as the official birthplace of Route 66. Other historical markers, including one for the Colonial Hotel, are located around the downtown area. One of the last remaining original stretches of Route 66 is at Glenstone and Kearney. The small section of road is near the Mavrick Convenience Store.

Campbell, the brother of John Paul Campbell, one of the founders of Springfield, Missouri. Sale PictureHere is Junius T. Campbell’s signature. Some info about him: Junius T. Campbell, from Tennessee, moved to Springfield, MO in 1831. He started his eight-year business by opening the first mercantile for the town. The opening of this store also began commerce for the little log cabin community. It wasn’t long before more stores, mills, a school, a post office, and other businesses started operating. In 1832, the community celebrated one of the first wedding ceremonies when Junius married Mary A. Blackwell. The two were parents of 14 children including John P. Campbell, former owner of the Gray/Campbell farmstead home.

Mr. Campbell held many prominent positions in Springfield. Between 1836 and 1855 he was the Justice of the Peace (although he only worked one case before resigning), County Treasurer, Postmaster, and County Sheriff. In 1876, Junius was the president of the Old Settlers’ Association.Another abstract and more history of Springfield. Sale PictureSale PictureA third abstract. Besides the three picture, we have a few other ones as well. This abstract contains the signature of Henry Fulbright. Henry is the son of William Wilson Fulbright, one of the first settlers in the Springfield area. Henry opened one of the first general stores in Springfield. Here’s a little bit of info about Henry.
In or around 1835, his son Henry opened one of the first general stores in Springfield, trading in goods from St. Louis.[2] By 1835, the settlement of Fulbright and Campbell Springs had been given the name of Springfield.[8] In 1840, William Wilson Fulbright entered into a partnership with his sons Henry and Ephraim to operate Henry's store.[2]
