Description & Details
HISTORIC ESTATE SALE
Saturday March 17th at 10:00 a.m.
609 North Meridian Street, Aberdeen MS 39730
Stevens Auction Company is delighted to announce the commission to offer at public auction the living estate of Mrs. Brenda McCarthy of Tupelo, Mississippi, along with select antiquities from two other prominent Southern estates.
The McCarthy estate is comprised of antique furnishings and other items from the Memphis, Tennessee home of McCarthy’s mother-in-law’s sister, Margaret Polk. Margaret Polk, of course, was the fianceé of Capt. Robert K. Morgan—pilot of the B-17F Flying Fortress—and the inspiration for the name, Memphis Belle. Morgan had his famous fighter plane so named because, he “... liked Southern belles, and Margaret was a southern belle . . . .”
See this link for more information on the Memphis Belle and Margaret Polk: http://www.lausanneschool.com/page.cfm?p=4663.
Ms. Polk was one of four children to Oscar B. Polk and Elizabeth Robb, and, through her father, was a close relative to James K. Polk, the eleventh President of the United States. Oscar Boyd Polk was a banker, real estate developer, cotton broker and was one of largest land owners in Mississippi and Arkansas where he owns thousands of acres of cotton land. He built his 3 story Queen Anne Home on Popular Avenue in Memphis, and then asks the R.J. Horner Company of New York to send a representative to Memphis to help furnish his show case home. His father, Oscar Boyle Polk, owned a large plantation in Harden County which dates back to 1820.
This auction will include hundreds of outstanding antiques, including beautiful china, silver, rugs, light fixtures, works of art, and many other items. However, the highlight of our auction will be the items from the McCarthy (Polk) Estate which include a magnificent collection made the by R. J. Horner Company of New York in 1893.
The open house preview will be on Friday, March 16, 2012, 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and again, beginning at 8:00 a.m. on auction day.
