Description & Details

Stevens Auction Company is pleased to announce the auction of the late Virginia Sykes, of Aberdeen, Mississippi. This absolute auction will include items from Mrs. Sykes’ personal, historic estate. Her story is one of history, romance, dedication and Southern grace, all of which can be witnessed through the wonderful collection of antiques and fine items she gained over almost 70 years in Aberdeen.

Virginia Sykes was a true Southern Lady, independent, warm & gracious, and perpetually kind. The daughter of a banker from Camden, Tennessee, Mrs. Sykes forsook a college education in order to start her very own trucking business right out of high school, in 1939. Her trucking company hauled chert for Southern companies. Years later, in the spring of 1942, Mrs. Sykes came to Aberdeen and was introduced to Eugene L. Sykes, Jr. It was love at first sight, and they were married by the summer of 1942—a match made in heaven.

Eugene L. Sykes, Jr. was eternally devoted to his Virginia, and she to him. She was very active in the Aberdeen community as well as with her husband’s varied business interests, helping him manage Sykes Plantation, outside of Aberdeen, and the Sykes Commission Company, a farm supply business. Eugene L. Sykes, Jr. was also a member of the Board of Directors at his father’s bank, First National Bank in Aberdeen. He & his Virginia made their home at the Old Homestead on Aberdeen’s Main Street and lived there together until he died in 1961. Mrs. Sykes lived in the Old Homestead, caring for her father-in-law, until his passing in 1965. Afterward, she sought a smaller abode where she could live the rest of her life, at which point she found Dunlee, an antebellum cottage suited perfectly for her, where she lived until she died at the end of 2009.
