Stevens Auction Company is pleased to announce the commission to sell at public auction the Real Estate and contents of the Trotter-Byrd Antebellum home owned by Mr. Harry H. Wheat and the late Sarah Jane Wheat. This beautiful historic gem built in 1852 is the only to escape the wrath of General Sherman during his occupation of Meridian and the surrounding area. This magnificent structure was built by William B. Trotter, originally of Tennessee, who was an attorney in Quitman. In 1845 Trotter was a candidate for fourth district attorney and colonel of the thirty-first regiment of the Mississippi Militia; later in 1847 he was elected brigadier general. Trotter married Elizabeth Lee Terrell, of Virginia, in 1846, whose mother, Frances Lewis Terell, was the granddaughter of Fielding Lewis and Catherine Washington, first cousin of founding father and first United States President George Washington. It is because of this family connection to Washington that it was spared the destruction by fire. It remains today as the only standing Antebellum structure in Quitman and one of three in Clarke County.

We will be offering at public auction the real estate consisting of a 5500 square foot Greek revival home which has three bedrooms and 2 baths along with a 900 square foot two story pool house and beautiful 20 x 40 pool. There is an additional bedroom and bathroom, kitchen and den in the pool house. This beautiful property will be sold promptly at 12 noon. Interested persons in the real estate should call Dwight Stevens, Salesman MS #S-28355 at 662-369-5257 r Tony Neill, Broker MS #B-17315 at 731-926-3133.

We will also be offering fine selected antique items from a large Baton Rouge, LA estate at this same location, as well the contents of the Wheat's home.  Items such as large plantation beds, oversize cylinder roll secretary, Steinway square grand piano, rosewood étagère, marble top parlor furnishings, beautiful lamps, fine china, old clocks, sterling silver, original works of art, Persian rugs, outdoor statuary, old Paris porcelains, antique cars, guns, shop tools, and hundreds of other items.

At 9:00 am we will be selling many items with local historical significance, such as the Quitman Drug Company and other items from Mr. Wheat's farm. There will be two open house previews. The first is on Sunday, June 18, 2017, 1-5, and then again on Friday, June 23, 2017, 10AM to 5PM. Individuals interested in bidding on live auctioneers must register 12 hours prior to the auction in order for your bid request to be approved. Doors will open at 8:00am on auction day. The property will be under heavy security due to the amount and value of items being sold.
