PREVIEW DATE: You may come by the home to PREVIEW ITEMS on Saturday Feb 2nd from 9am to 3pm. ONLINE SALE DATES: Bidding starts at 12:00 pm EST Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019. Lots will close every minute starting with Lot 1 at 12:00pm on Friday, Feb. 8th 2018. Individual closing will be extended 5 minutes when a new bid comes in within 5 minutes of lot closing. Bidding is predicted to end early evening on Friday Feb 8th. A notice will be sent to the high bidder once bidding ends.

PICK UP: Local pick up only between 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Saturday, Feb 9th and 2:00 pm to 5:00pm on Sunday Feb 10th. You MUST communicate with us regarding payment and pick up/shipping plans. Please call 828-772-5959 or email michelle@downsizewnc.com with your plans. Access to items is direct without any stairs or hazards. PLEASE BRING HELP FOR HEAVY ITEMS. WE WILL BE UNABLE TO ASSIST YOU. Display cases are in a basement and will need to be taken up a narrow flight of stairs. Not repsonsible for damage moving.

LOCATION: Pick up location is at residence in Royal Pines in S. Asheville, NC. Exact location of pick up will be on your invoice if you win any items.

PAYMENT INFO: You will receive an EMAIL with an attached invoice from us AFTER THE CLOSE OF THE ENTIRE AUCTION, not after the item was sold. This email will include payment instructions via PayPal and instructions for pick up. Paypal requires a secure sign in and accepts all credit card payments. Buyer will need an account on Paypal.com and will use our email address,michelle@downsizewnc.com, for payment on PayPal. We will also accept credit card or cash payment at pick up. We accept Visa, MC, Discover and American Express. NO PERSONAL CHECKS PLEASE.

A customary 15% buyer premium will automatically be added to final bid price. This fee is charged by auctioneers to help offset the costs of holding the sale.

If you need to make other payment arrangements, you MUST call us to communicate prior to pick up date or your items will be forfeited. **All items must be paid for within 24 hours of sale ending (that means by Sunday Feb 10th at 5 pm) using PAYPAL or call us to communicate other payment preferences. No exceptions. NO REFUNDS OR RETURNS WILL BE ISSUED.

SHIPPING: We will drop off your items at the POSTAGE EXPRESS shipping store in CANDLER. You will pay them directly for shipping. They will pack and wrap everything. The cost is based on the dimensions of the package and how much bubble wrap is needed. You should call them at (828) 670-5501 OR email candler@postageexp.com to get an estimate of the cost BEFORE BIDDING. Sometimes shipping costs will exceed the final value of the item. If this is the case and you are not happy with the shipping costs you are still responsible for the amount bid and will be charged. If you plan to bid on an item and need it shipped please contact us and we will give you an ESTIMATE of the dimensions of the box or boxes required but are not shipping experts and offer this service for your convenience. Description & Details

This comprehensive Royal Pines area (S. Asheville) online auction only sale features a large collection of rough gems, minerals, crystals and rocks along with glass front display cases. Also a large collection of North Carolina Native American artifacts, relics and projectile points can be found Lot #276.

Beginning with lot #196, you will find a very fine collection of 1970's southern studio stoneware and porcelain pottery from the living estate of Charles Rathbun including stunning pieces by Charles Counts and Michael Pitts. Notice a large well preserved stamp collection and SBI memorabilia listed. The owner was a special agent and fingerprint trainer for the State Bureau of Investigation, as well as a sheriff and rock hound with a penchant for preserving, categorizing and cataloging. There are also many lightly used household practical items, tools, collectibles and a scattering of vintage toys, ephemera, office equipment and quality Asian and American antiques throughout. 

Please view all photos on each listing to get a complete appreciation of the offering. Every effort is made to point out flaws and nothing damaged or not working is being sold, (aside from expected vintage condition on older items). Living Estate sale being offered online only with preview on February 2nd. Part of Lot #276Lot 114: Large Group of US Rough Gems and Minerals in Display Case
Glass diplay case with separate base measures 69" L x 20" D x 51" H. One front edge is chipped on top left front corner. 2 glass insert shelves. Sliding rear doors. This grouping is comprised of many wonderful United States samples collected in the 50's and 60's from the collection of Claude Davis. Approximately 69 rough gems and minerals. See photographs for complete listings. Lot 268: Three 70's Studio Pottery Pieces from Charles Counts and Rising Fawn.
Two pieces are signed by Charles Counts: the 8" ovoid handled jug and the blue and grey 5.5" dish with "inner flame" scored design. The 7.5" turquoise and peacock blue colored plate with fish scale design is etched "Rising Fawn" on the back. Rising Fawn is the name of the arts community outside of Lookout Mtn., TN. The pieces are very fine examples from the 1970's with beautiful glazing. No cracks, chips or kiln errors noted. Fish scale blue plate marked Rising Fawn is slightly warped. Charles Counts (1934–2000) was an American potter, designer, textile artist, quilter, teacher, writer, and activist. Counts worked to preserve the art forms of his native Appalachia, and produced and sold at Rising Fawn and Plum Nelly Clothesline Art Show.Lot 212: G. 6" H x 4" W lidded vessel numbered "P-23" from the 1970's. Lovely glaze and exceptional piece of art studio pottery. Signed by artist. No chips or kiln flaws. These pieces do not come up for auction often. Living estate of Charles Rathbun.Lot 272: Two 1970's Studio Pottery Pieces by Michael Pitts
The stoneware 8" covered crock is a beautiful example of Pitt's work. It is signed and dated 1975 and scored and painted with a geometric bauhaus style design. The circular design bowl is painted on and 6.5" wide overall. It is also signed and dated 1975. No chips, cracks or kiln errors noted. The covered crock is larger than other pieces of Southern Studio Pottery being sold Michaell Pitts is from Watkinsville, GA and is living, but currently lecturers and no longer produces pottery. Second small case of NC gems and minerals in wood case with removable sliding glass front. Case is 20" W x 30" H x 25" D. Features a group of Emerald in Matrix and faceted Aquamarine. It is located in the basement and will have to be taken up a narrow flight of stairs. Please bring your own packing and moving material as well as muscle. Impressive labeled collection of Native American relics, beads, tools, pottery shards and arrowheads and projectile points all excavated in various counties in North Carolina. Collection shows the county where items were found including Indian beads, spearhead and chisels from Hertford County, NC home of the Meherrin tribe; Cherokee drills and chisel from Yancey Co; a Native American sign found in Graham Co; an axe head found in guilford Co; a skinning knife and Tomahawk head from Yancey Co; a paint rock and game rock found in Cherokee Co; a gorget neck ornament from Clay Co; a spear head from Yancey Co; an axe head found in Madison Co; a Tomahawk from Madison Co; 3 peace pipes from various counties (see labels in photo); a Cherokee seal embroiered patch; a 28" wooden carved and painted Totem Pole. by Asheville artist Verdelle Gray (1918-2015). This is from the 1970's. Her early background in ballet prompted her to produce a "dancing Frog" from clay, and she later became know as the "Frog Lady" at craft fairs. Verdelle's work has been exhibited all over the county, and as far away as Belgium and India. Verdelle, as well as her clay artistry, will long be remembered. On solid wood base. Signed . Three signed vintage studio pottery stoneware vessels by Watkinsville, GA potter Michael Pitts dated from the 1970's. The bamboo handles teapot with bauhaus "Picassoesque" design is 7" tall without handle. It features a grey wash over the navy blue design. The other two are corked crocks. The taller geometric scored piece measures 5.5" high. The striped banded crock measures 3.5" high. No cracks, chips or kiln flaws noted. Banded and cut out southwest and deco inspired covered ovoid pot with ball handle lid. Lowfire terracotta. Do not recognize potter's signature, but believe it to be a southern artist from the 1970's.
