Dr. Otis Edward Tillman & Mrs. Barbara Kelly Tillman
True Humanitarians in the High Point Community
Dr. Otis Tillman was the epitome of what it means to be a family doctor for over 45 years. He provided medical care and was on call for the community regardless of a patient’s zip code or socio-economic standing. His service, kindness, and dedication for the well-being, growth, and development of this community are well documented and appreciated.
He held leadership positions in many professional, social, and civic organizations and was very active during the civil rights movement. When speaking at churches and schools, his message was based on his lived and demonstrated testimony. To the youth it was - “Value education, accept the models very carefully, and don’t be afraid of hard work.” His challenge to adults was- “Create and maintain a strong family unit, value personal pride, and develop a strong and steadfast religious faith.” And, he would say to everyone- “Each of us has the opportunity, yes even the obligation, to play our part in advancing our community, state, and nation to a higher standard of living, not only for ourselves but for all future generations that will come seeking the same freedom we now enjoy.”
Dr. Tillman was a native of Anson County and was married to the former Barbara Kelly of Troy, NC. After graduating from college Mrs. Tillman worked as an educator in her hometown. Dr. & Mrs. Tillman moved to High Point in 1958 and together, they built a successful medical practice with his stellar medical talent and her astute business and managerial acumen. Mrs. Tillman was also dedicated to serving the community as a member of many social and civic organizations, including Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, The Links, Incorporated, and The Alpha Art Club. She loved to travel and had a keen eye for fashion.
They shared their lives with the community they loved, and never shunned the opportunity to take on the challenges to change their environment for the better. They left an indelible imprint on countless High Pointers and beyond, and their legacy of being smart, kind-hearted, God fearing, philanthropic, stylish, and a joy to be around will continue to inspire generations yet to come.
Dr. & Mrs. Tillman were married for 62 years and were a match made in heaven. Their union was blessed with four children (Chiquita McAllister, Bonita Brown, Tammye Jones, and Otis, Jr., aka Chip), nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. The Tillman's were faithful members of Greater First United Baptist Church.
