ARISAKA TYPE 38 SERVICE RIFLE
The Arisaka Type 38 Service Rifle is a K98 Mauser inspired bolt action rifle designed in 1905 that was
used by the Empire of Japan predominantly during the Second Sino-Japanese War and Second World
War. It was partially replaced during WWII with the Arisaka Type 99 rifle.
The Type 38 has a 31 in. barrel, 5 shot internal box mag., one-piece bolt construction, controlled feed
Mauser style extractor, adj. rear peep style ladder sight, fixed shrouded front blade sight, full length

grooves on forearm, knurled knob style safety located on the rear of the bolt body, action operated
sliding dust cover, lever-style bolt release with integral ejector, blued finish. Mfg. 1905-1945. Post-war
inspection of the Type 38 by the U.S. military and the National Rifle Association found that the Type
38's receiver was the strongest bolt action of any nation's[12] and capable of handling more powerful
cartridges.
Rifles given to schools often have an additional character stamped on the top of the receiver between
the chrysanthemum and the type designation characters. Most of these "school-marked" rifles also
have two or three zeros preceding the serial number. The "school" mark looks something like this:
This rare rifle has the “school” symbol and two different rack mount numbers on the stock. All School
rifles had rack mount numbers since they were not issued to an individual student.
