The Legacy of Vincenzo’s Italian Restaurant
For over six decades, Vincenzo’s Italian Restaurant stood as a beloved cornerstone of the Winston-Salem community. As the city’s longest-running Italian eatery, it was far more than just a place to grab a slice of pizza; it was a sanctuary of warm hospitality, generations of family memories, and comforting, scratch-made food. When it finally closed its doors in late 2025 due to post-pandemic operational strains and the well-earned retirement of its ownership, it marked the bittersweet end of a legendary local era.
The Founding: A Family Called to Action
The story of Vincenzo's began in 1964, a time when authentic Italian cuisine was a rare luxury in the Twin City area. The spark for the restaurant came from Vincent “Nick” Patella Sr., a former Wake Forest University "Demon Deacon" football player. Recognizing a distinct void in the local food scene, Nick reached out to his family in Pennsylvania, who were running an Italian eatery in a heavily oversaturated market.
Seeing a golden opportunity, his parents and brothers packed up and moved south to Winston-Salem. They opened their first iteration near Hanes Park in a building previously occupied by the College Inn. Naming the new North Carolina venture after one of the brothers, Vince, the Patella family successfully introduced authentic Italian flavors to an eager new audience. They eventually planted permanent roots at their iconic 3449 Robinhood Road location, helping solidify pizza and red-sauce classics as an everyday habit for Winston-Salem residents.
Generations of Tradition
What made Vincenzo’s truly exceptional was its unwavering commitment to family operational traditions:
- Multi-Generational Leadership: Founded by Nick Sr., the restaurant transitioned smoothly across generations, later managed by Vincent Patella Jr. alongside his own grandsons, James and Richard Patella.
- Uncompromising Culinary Staples: For over 60 years, the kitchen preserved time-tested recipes, drawing crowds for their signature New York-style thin-crust pizza, rich homemade lasagna, minestrone, and classic spaghetti specials.
- A Community Living Room: Vincenzo's served as the backdrop for countless first dates, Sunday family dinners, post-game celebrations, and milestones, defining what it meant to be a true neighborhood institution.
Though the kitchen on Robinhood Road has gone quiet, the legacy of the Patella family’s leap of faith in 1964 remains a beautiful chapter in Winston-Salem's culinary history.
