***VITTI ARTISANS GALLERY was Vitti’s brainchild and a fixture of Upper Montclair shopping for 35 years. Previous to making this dream come true, Vitti ran the wildly successful Lee Nordness Art Gallery on New York’s upper east side in the 1970’s. In fact it was Lee who decided that Vitti’s original “pedestrian” name would never work in his gallery. Several days later he dubbed her VITTI VAN CLEEF. In short order she changed her name legally. Even her family reluctantly began to call her Vitti in spite of themselves. She was forever VITTI to everyone going forward. Simply a self-made woman.
Once her one-of-a-kind art jewelry store opened in Upper Montclair (Lee Nordness was in attendance on opening day), many stores failed to make it in a very competitive locale, as Vitti kept expanding. With an uncanny ability to reach out to artisans around the country to buy wearable art, jewelry, blown glass and other artifacts she always seemed to have her finger on the pulse of what her clientele would love. She had a phenomenal memory to boot; most husbands relied on her to know exactly what their wives liked. Vitti might have saved a lot of marriages.
She was a local superstar who made believe that she didn’t like the recognition and the adulation. But she did. Quietly. Privately. Vitti was a unique and amazing person. She will be sorely missed by many. Luckily, hundreds of people in and out of Montclair own a piece of history from her one-of-a-kind store.***
