A word about 1960s and 1970s vintage posters

Poster design of the 1960’s ushered in the age of the Graphic Design Titans: Milton Glaser, Seymour Chwast and Peter Max, and Bernard Villemot, Raymind Savignac, Jean Carlu in France. These and other designers mined the popular culture and combined bold psychadelic imagery and colors with modern typography in their work, but most notably, in their poster designs. Posters were readily available at record stores and packaged with albums. In the hands youth, hung on the walls of half-finished basements and college dormroom walls, these posters became the very banners of the cultural revolution across America and France. The designs aesthetics would shape and define “Modern” for the 1960’s and 70’s, a time when the line between high art and lowbrow became blurred. This sale features many prime, original examples from the era. All have been flat-stored with care and protected from UV exposure.

A Legacy of Love for Art and Family

Here lived Robert, a modern Renaissance man who lived 100 years, sustained by an enthusiasm for learning, an insatiable curiosity, and keen eye for collecting. During WWII, Robert left Boston College to volunteer for the Army. He was wounded in France, and took part in the liberation of Nazi Camps. Robert returned home to complete his education—as a devout Pacifist. He met his wife Mary, and started a Catholic mail order business selling religious artifacts and reproductions. In the early 1960s Robert collaborated with educators and popular artists to create Art Education, Inc., a well-acclaimed and widely distributed series of instructional art curriculum textbooks for school-age children.

Together with his wife Mary, they raised nine(!) children. In keeping with their parents’ legacy, all nine of Robert and Mary’s children chose a life involved in the arts. (Among the nine are art teachers, painters, photographers, and musicians). This family’s remarkable legacy of art appreciation lives on, absorbed by countless public school children who benefitted from an early exposure to arts education.

The importance of teaching art

"Art makes us human. It helps us to make sense of our own lives and identify with the lives of others. It is also increasingly recognized as a driver of the innovative thinking needed to solve our world’s most pressing problems. Learning and practicing art, and tapping into your creativity, can make you better at whatever you do."— Lewis Center for the Arts Minor Program, Princeton University
